George Lucas Donates His $4 Billion Disney Paycheck to Education Charity
In a deal set to finalize by year’s end, Disney has made a Jabba The Hutt size investment in the future of Star Wars by purchasing Lucasfilm Pictures — a deal that will also ultimately make a sizeable investment in the future of education.
In a statement released to The Hollywood Reporter, a spokesperson for George Lucas, the creative visionary behind the entire Star Wars franchise, pledged to put the $4.05 billion he’ll earn from selling his company to Disney towards a charity foundation focused on improving education. Wow — that’s a whole lotta textbooks.
Aside from educating the country about Jedis and Wookies, George has long since shown a devotion to other philanthropic endeavors, educational and otherwise. In addition to numerous multi-million dollar donations to charities like Make-A-Wish and Stand Up to Cancer, in 2010 he made a commitment to The Giving Pledge, in which he declared,
I am dedicating the majority of my wealth to improving education. It is the key to the survival of the human race. We have to plan for our collective future -- and the first step begins with social, emotional and intellectual tools we provide to our children. As humans, our greatest tool for survival is our ability to think and to adapt — as educators, storytellers and communicators, our responsibility is to continue to do so.
With this multi-billion dollar donation, George has made good on his pledge and then some — looks like The Force is very strong in this one!
