Ted (Josh Radnor) has mucked up countless relationships because of Robin (Cobie Smulders) on How I Met Your Mother, but Season 8, Episode 5: "The Autumn of Break-Ups" added a new twist to that age-old tale. For once, it wasn't his latent romantic feelings for his friend that got in the way of his happy ending. No, it was the latent romantic feeling Victoria (Ashley Williams) was afraid he might have for Robin that put the final nail in the coffin of their relationship. Ted proposed, and Victoria accepted — on one condition. Yep, it was that time-honored sitcom doozy: I won't marry you unless you stop being friends with her.
Normally, that kind of ultimatum would be a no-brainer: Dump the doofus who doesn't trust you to stay faithful! However, in this case we can kind of understand Victoria's POV. After all, Ted did break up with her because of Robin the first time around. We get why it would be hard for her to see them constantly hanging out.
That said, we're glad Ted chose Robin's friendship over Victoria's love. In the end, the gang is a family, and if Ted had to cut off ties with Robin entirely it wouldn't just be sad for them — it would destroy the entire group, making it hard for everyone. That wasn't a fair thing for Victoria to ask.
Do you agree, or do you think Ted should have chosen love over friendship? While we know it works out in the end (thanks, non-linear storytelling!), at the time Victoria was the closest Ted had come to finally settling down since Stella. That's a lot to give up.
