Woman in Labor So Determined to Vote, She Casts Her Ballot Before Heading to Hospital!
For first time mother Galicia Malone of Dolton, Illinois, childbirth wasn’t the only first she had been eagerly anticipating. CBS Chicago reports the 21-year-old also couldn’t wait to vote for her very first time in a presidential election. The problem? Her labor began at 3 a.m. on Election Day — before polling booths had opened!
For Galicia, the answer was easy — she could have two firsts in one day. Her solution was to wait out her labor in the early morning until her polling location opened. By the time she was able to get to a ballot, her contractions were just five minutes apart! “I was just trying to read and breathe, read and breathe,” Galicia explains. “That’s what I kept telling myself, ‘Read and breathe, read and breathe.”
Once her ballot was cast, she drove herself straight to the hospital. She says, “I never voted before so this made a major difference in my life,” adding, “and I wanted this to be a stepping-stone for my daughter.”
