It takes two to Tango, but three to Trio Tango. Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Week 8 will see a return of the fun element first added last season, the Trio Dances — where an extra pro dancer is chosen to dance with each couple.
The seven remaining Season 15 pairs chose a pro either from the DWTS troupe or someone who was already eliminated earlier this season. Also, in addition to the Trio dance, everyone has another ballroom dance. So there are two dances on Monday, November 12, and a double elimination on Tuesday, November 13. All the scores from Week 7 will carry over and be added to the scores earned this coming Monday.
The couples talked to On the Red Carpet about their Week 8 dances, and/or tweeted details about them — although we’re still waiting for a few more updates. It’s going to be great to see more of our beloved pros in the ballroom, but we’re already nervous about two couples going home on Tuesday. Still, the show must go on!
Melissa Rycroft & Tony Dovolani
Trio choice: Henry Byalikov
Dances: Quickstep and Paso Doble
Melissa and Tony are entering Week 8 with the top score on the judges’ leaderboard, thanks to winning the swing marathon. Tony told OTRC, "The Trio is Paso Doble. ... It's kind of like a showcase. The way that I look at it is, try to make [Melissa] the center of attention even more and try getting two boys to actually really frame her as best as we can." Melissa said they are also going to spotlight Henry from the troupe. Tony said Henry’s a great dancer and he's really going to enhance their partnership. Henry tweeted a cute photo of the three dancers: "@MelissaRycroft & @TonyDovolani r the sweetest So wonderful to work with!! Grateful for this opportunity..Thank you!" Tony retweeted, adding "We are soooo happy with our pick." According to @DWTSGossip, their other dance is Quickstep.
Kelly Monaco & Valentin Chmerkovskiy
Trio choice: Louis van Amstel
Kelly said she doesn't have to work for the next three weeks (on General Hospital), so this might be her time to shine on DWTS. They picked Louis for the Trio because Kelly has known him since she won Season 1 and she's always wanted to work with him. (Plus, he does have a history of working well with girls named Kelly...) Louis was also one of Val's dance teachers and called him "the professional of the professionals." He also quipped, "I suggested a gay man because that was the only way I would be OK with another man dancing with my Kelly Monaco." Oh, Val! Kelly said, "He's teasing, obviously." But at least he's totally shirtless while he's teasing. Watch and drool. Unfortunately, they have yet to reveal any details about their dances, but we should all keep an eye out.
Shawn Johnson & Derek Hough
Trio choice: Mark Ballas
Dances: Viennese Waltz and Samba
Working with Mark has proven to be successful for Shawn — back on Season 8 and again last week when Derek was injured. So they are doing it again this week. “It’s going to be fun,” Derek told On the Red Carpet. “I love the song. It’s very different than we’ve done on the show before and, yeah, we have some cool ideas.” Mark added that it will definitely be something we’ve never seen before. Derek said the song is all percussion, no melody. Derek also tweeted, "Great first day back with Shawn ... Vienesse waltz to one of the most beautiful songs of all time . And our samba music is out of control"
Gilles Marini & Peta Murgatroyd
Trio choice: Chelsie Hightower
Dances: Quickstep and Salsa
Gilles shared on Facebook, "Time to focus on @PetaMurgatroyd and I and our dances ! Next week we do the Quickstep and then a Trio Salsa , I chose @chelsiehightowr (Chelsie Hightower) to dance with us . I think she is an incredible dancer and a very sweet soul! it will be lot of fun ! What do you think ?" Gilles joked to On the Red Carpet that he's going to dance with two blondes, so hopefully the judges will give them four 10s. "We wanted to do Salsa for a long time," Peta told OTRC, "so I think it's going to be a good dance for him." Gilles can't believe they are entering Week 8 in fifth place, out of seven couples. He's not used to that. He was puzzled by getting kicked out of the swing marathon so early.
Apolo Anton Ohno & Karina Smirnoff
Trio choice: Sasha Farber
Dances: Tango and Jive
"The reason why we picked Sasha is because A) he's an amazing dancer, and he's very, very athletic," Karina said. "We're going to be dancing to 'Grease Lightning' from Grease, which is obviously one of the coolest movies. [Apolo is] going to be John Travolta. I'm going for Olivia Newton-John.” Apolo said this will be his second time playing John Travolta, since he played JT in a Pulp Fiction piece with Julianne Hough on Season 4. Does Kirstie know Apolo is stealing the love of her life? Maybe Apolo can be the new love of her life...
Emmitt Smith & Cheryl Burke
Trio choice: Kym Johnson
Dances: Viennese Waltz and Salsa
They don’t reveal their dance styles or pro choice in the video, but Cheryl said she didn’t want another male to outshine “Smitty” so she picked a female partner — and it turns out she chose her best DWTS buddy, Kym. It’s best friends’ week! Cheryl also tweeted, "We are doing a Viennese Waltz and a trio Salsa!! So excited. It's going to be a fun week. Now back to Dallas!"
Kirstie Alley & Maksim Chmerkovskiy
Trio choice: Tristan MacManus
Dances: Viennese Waltz and ???
Kirstie told OTRC she picked Tristan because she has a crush on him and thought he was single. Oops! Turns out, that’s not the case. Read more about it here. Funny stuff. And, girl, ditto on that disappointment. But we’ll have to stay tuned for intel on their dance styles, because they haven’t shared that yet. However, Tristan did tweet, “Well this should be a good bit of craic @kirstiealley @MaksimC.” Apparently “craic” means fun. A craic time for all! (Update: in his TV Guide blog, Maks said one of their dances is Viennese Waltz.)
