Vampire Diaries Top 5 OMG Moments From Season 4, Episode 5, “The Killer”

We love those moments on The Vampire Diaries that make us gasp, pause, and rewind — and Season 4, Episode 5, “The Killer,” is chock full of them. Here are the scenes that left our jaws agape.

5. Bonnie gets her groove back
“Do you really think you can help me start practicing magic again?” Bonnie (Kat Graham) asked Professor Shane (David Alpay). And we wondered, too. As every Vampire Diarist knows, the witch of Mystic Falls is just not herself without a circle of burning candles. Yet it has been weeks since Bon-Bon’s been able to spark one up. Enter Professor Shane. “Absolutely, I can,” he promised. “I invited you here because I can.” That last bit was a lie. But it looks like the sketchy PhD may have helped Bonnie move past her issues with the dead witches to channel the power within. Sure, it took some super-strong (and possibly illegal) herbal tea and seven hours of hypnosis to do it, but at the end of the marathon witch therapy session, Shane placed a candle on the table and tasked Bon-Bon with lighting it. She closed her eyes and chanted, “You don’t have to be afraid.” When she opened her eyes, the candle in front of her remained dark. But every other candle in the room burned bright.

4. Damon pulls on Stefan’s heartstrings
We mean that literally. When Stefan (Paul Wesley) made the mistake of placing himself between Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and the vampire slayer Connor (Todd Williams), Damon vowed to take his little brother out. Fueled by the rage he’d built up while tunneling through a septic tank, the elder Salvatore grabbed his sibling, slammed him into a stone wall, finger-stabbed into his chest, grabbed his heart, and started to pull.

3. Jeremy gets marked
Elena’s (Nina Dobrev little brother just can’t catch a break. On the one day he shows up early for work, crazy vampire hunter Connor Jordan takes him hostage. Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) then spends the next few hours being held captive and nearly getting killed. In the midst of it all, he learns that one of his friends has repeatedly erased his memory. And still he finds it within himself to give his vervain bracelet away to a girl who doesn’t even know its powers. Less than a minute after he does, Jeremy feels a twinge. He looks down only to discover that he has been hired for a job to which he never applied. Jeremy’s hand carries the mark of The Five — meaning he has been chosen to dedicate his life to killing his vampire friends.

2. Elena kills a man
Hunter Connor Jordan took the wrong busboy hostage when he locked Jeremy in Mystic Grill. First Stefan and the hybrid came for him. Then Damon tried to take him out. But it was neophyte bloodsucker Elena who cornered him in a tunnel beneath the city. “Stay the hell away from my brother!” she growled after going for his jugular. Elena didn’t drink, she just gnashed. Then she shoved the slayer to the ground. “You’re the biggest monster he’ll ever meet,” Connor said. Ever a fighter, he pulled a stake from his boot and jabbed it into Elena. Unlucky for him, he didn’t hit her heart. “You missed,” she said. Then Elena broke Connor’s neck.

1. Damon shows his true (love) colors
When the elder Salvatore asked Stefan if he wanted to cure Elena because he couldn’t truly love her as a vampire, he posed a query we’d all wondered about. That was good enough. But then D raised the stakes when he told Stefan, “I’m fine with her either way, brother. So if I do this, I’m doing it for you.” With that one statement, Damon showed how much he cares for his brother and for the woman he may never have. It was a deep, tender moment from the brother who’s supposed to be the beast.
