Glee’s Vanessa Lengies on Season 4’s Grease Episode — and Getting Serenaded By Darren Criss! Exclusive
Forget “Greased Lightning.” We’re more excited about “Gleased Lightning.” Glee is taking on the classic music of Grease during Thursday’s Season 4, Episode 6: “Glease,” with a total of six new performances.
In one of them, Blaine (Darren Criss) serenades Sugar (Vanessa Lengies) with the soda shop hit “Beauty School Dropout.” Wetpaint Entertainment spoke exclusively with Vanessa for a sneak peek at what to expect from the tune.
Can I tell you, you're DiDi Conn reincarnated. It was crazy to see that picture of you. Oh my God. Can you believe it? I didn't even know I looked like her until that wig came on. I think they saw it. I mean I've never thought about it before, and I love Grease. I was on American Dreams and doing all those ‘60s themes, and nobody ever mentioned it.
Do we get to see a lot of Frenchy in those Grease moments? Well, we did “Beauty School Dropout” with Darren Criss's character, and so we recreated that whole scene, almost to a tee. And it's fantastic. And Heather Morris and Becca Tobin and Jenna Ushkowitz are all in those crazy head pieces with the hair rolls on them. It's great.
What else can you tell us about Glease? It's very Grease saturated. There's a lot of Grease moments. [Choreographer] Zach Woodlee was just telling me that we're not allowed to do it too much like the movie, so certain things we did a lot like the original, and certain things we made our own and did it uniquely.
Can you tell us which ones differ from the original movie? Yeah, we had this sleepover scene with all the girls which was so fun to shoot. We ate so many donuts that day. It was crazy. So in the sleepover scene, we wanted it to be like the sleepover scene from Grease, but changed as many things as possible to make it more Glee. That's the one we purposely tried to put our own spin on as much as possible.
And apart from “Beauty School Dropout” what else is done frame by frame? I think “Greased Lightning.” Did you see the pictures? It's all the hunky boys of Glee doing the hunkiest musical number, so it's fantastic. They had this car and mechanic jumpers. It was awesome. And I think the episode after that is our sectionals again. It's crazy. Times flies.
