Anne Hathaway’s 500-Calorie Les Miz Diet: What She Ate to Prepare For the Role
Today is Anne Hathaway’s 30th birthday, and there’s no one in Hollywood who deserves a giant piece of cake more. In the December issue of Vogue, the Oscar-nominated actress reveals more details about the crazy 500-calorie diet that helped her shed 25 pounds for her role in Les Miserables. For early scenes in the film, “she went on a strict cleanse and lost ten pounds, which in the early scenes of the film gives her a gossamer quality.” As if that wasn’t intense enough (Anne was already pretty slight for her role in The Dark Knight Rises), she then lost another 15 pounds in two weeks by eating — get this — “two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day.” Appealing as that sounds, something tells us the Dried Oatmeal Paste Plan isn’t poised to sweep the nation as the latest fad diet. And that’s probably for the best, since it’s not at all healthy. Anne herself admits the crash diet was a little nutty, even if it was necessary to make her performance believable.
“I had to be obsessive about it — the idea was to look near death,” she recalls. “Looking back on the whole experience — and I don’t judge it in any way — it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fantine is anyway.”
Well, now that you’re back to reality, Anne, we hope you’re having a little less death-by-oatmeal and a little more death-by-chocolate.
