Derek Hough: Backstage, the DWTS Judges Said They Loved the Trio Tribal Samba

Is it time for Derek Hough and Len Goodman to take it outside?

On Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Week 5, judge Len got upset with pro dancer Derek for what he felt was not a proper Rumba with Shawn Johnson. On Country Week 6, Len complained to Derek about the “frippery” and “gimmicks” in their Cha-Cha-Cha. And last night, Len really showed his grumpy side when dissing Team Shawnough’s Week 8 Trio Samba with Mark Ballas.

Their tribal routine impressed Carrie Ann Inaba enough to flash her 10 paddle. Bruno Tonioli gave it a 9, sharing some of Len’s concerns that it didn’t have enough Samba content. But Len went full-on against Derek and Mark’s choreography, giving them a super-low 7, saying it wasn’t a Samba and if Shawn goes home tonight she should blame the two pros. Gulp!

Len did say that he’d love the dance if he were just watching from the audience, and Derek told Zap2it he heard more praise about the dance after the cameras stopped rolling. "They had an issue on television, [but] backstage they were like, 'Oh my gosh, we loved it!'" And Derek is not too worried about that score, or scores in general. "Percentage-wise, [the judges' scores are] so close, they don't matter. They just don't.”

Besides, even with that 7, when combined with the scores from last week, Shawn and Derek are still in second place, behind Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani. And with Len’s outburst rallying fans, they are probably beyond safe going into tonight’s Results Show. "So far this season, the lower the score from Len, the better we're doing,” Derek joked, “[so] we're doing something right."

Something memorable, anyway!
