The illness explored this week is Cyclic Vomiting Syndrome (CVS), a mitochondrial dysfunction that causes sufferers to vomit between 6 and 12 times per hour in acute bouts. Some people have these symptoms for just a few hours periodically, and some have them for up to three weeks.
After “Second Opinion” airs, Chandra will appear in a 10-second public service announcement, where she will point viewers to the CVS Association’s website. Chandra believes that if she can help even one Grey’s viewer hear the syndrome’s name out loud and identify their own symptoms, then she’s done her job.
“I heard the strong desire from sufferers and their families to have a CVS storyline on Grey’s Anatomy,” Chandra tells Look to the Stars. “I had been talking about it for about a season, and decided to make an official pitch to the writers before we went back to work for season 9.”
While Chandra will be watching the episode at a viewing party at the Westin Pasadena Hotel in California (she also directed this episode), we’ll be watching at home, admiring her heroic actions.
