The Voice’s Sylvia Yacoub on Her Celine Dion Performance: “I Hope It Encourages People to Take Risks”
After dazzling America with her heartfelt rendition of Katy Perry’s “The One That Got Away” last week on The Voice Season 3, Team Christina’s Sylvia Yacoub went for an iconic power ballad this week.
The Egyptian singer chose Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” for her Top 12 live show performance — a move that few, if any, have tried in the past. Coach Cee Lo Green even admitted it was his second favorite version after the original since he’d never heard it covered before.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the brave singer on the red carpet after her live show performance last night. Going into tonight’s live results show, Sylvia just hopes her choices have inspired America.
Wetpaint Entertainment: How do you feel at this point in the show? Are you happy with your latest performance?
Sylvia Yacoub: Two things went through my mind. 'Oh crap' was definitely one of them. And the second one was 'Gosh, I love this song.' I have so much respect for Celine. Obviously it was a challenge but I love taking risks. So I'm really happy with it. I wanted people today to like this song because it's so iconic and I feel like a lot of people today don't appreciate it as much. Do you feel like you took a risk with this song?
I feel like I went out there and I wanted to do something that was a risk and put my voice in it. I feel so good about it. I hope it encourages people to take risks. What do you see for your music career regardless of the show’s outcome?
I just want to be known as a singer that people feel like they can relate with. They feel like they can listen to my music and really feel a connection. I obviously want to put out fun pop music and stuff like that, but I want to be that voice for people.
