Joe Manganiello Talks Gaining 20 Pounds, Growing that Crazy Beard, and Letting His Freak Flag Fly

You’ve seen his Lincolnesque beard. You’ve seen his cornrows. And you’ve seen his massive guns (not to be confused with the ripped actor’s firearm props). And now the truth comes out: True Blood star Joe Manganiello’s shocking body transformation is all for his role in the upcoming Arnold Schwarzenegger action flick Ten.

And yes, he thinks that beard looks as garish as you do.

“Now I have a huge Unabomber beard,” he tells, adding that he has also put on 20 pounds. “I look like a biker/murderer, which is really what I’m playing.”

In the movie, Joe is part of a DEA team battling Mexican cartels. And the role involved months of training with all sorts of professional badasses. Plus he had a lot of design input for those menacing tattoos lining his massive arms.

Instead of asking him to do his Magic Mike body rolls, fans now approach Joe with a different question. “‘Hey, I went to go get my car fixed, and I’m pretty sure that they screwed me over. Can you go and talk to these people for me?’ That’s my request now,” he jokes.

He says that director David Ayers (End of Watch) gave a lot of artistic freedom to the cast — which also includes Lost’s Josh Holloway, Avatar’s Sam Worthington, and The Killing’s Mireille Enos, Iron Man’s Terrence Howard, and Revenge’s Max Martini.

“David lets you fly your freak flag as big as you want,” Joe says, elaborating that the director let him be as mean as he wanted, to replicate how scary Joe’s real-life mentors were.

But maybe all of that freedom went to Joe’s head a little too much. He recounts a time when, during a take, he threatened a random extra with a machete, which made the director a bit nervous.

“So [David allows] pretty much anything south of pulling a machete on an unsuspecting extra. And hell, I think that was the take. So I think even that goes.”
