What Happened to Farrah Abraham’s Boyfriend, Derek? You Asked, We Answered
Teen Mom'sFarrah Abraham is a role model to young mothers around the world, but her path to single mommy-dom wasn't easy.
Farrah and her boyfriend, Derek Underwood, got knocked up at the tender age of 16, and didn't stay together through the pregnancy. Sadly, Farrah cut off communication with Derek, only to find out that he died in a car accident shortly after.
Derek passed away on Dec. 28, 2009 (just two months before Baby Sophia was born) when he and his friends lost control of their car and it ran into a power pole. Derek's buddy Zachary Mendoza also died, but their mutual friend Dustin Congdon survived the accident.
Derek's obituary states that he was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, and worked at a waiter at Rick's Boatyard in Omaha. He graduated from Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson High School in 2008, and was survived by his parents and sisters.
"He would always cook for us, and all his friends, whenever they came to the house, he loved to cook, he was going to go to culinary school," Kassy Underwood said.
Tragically, Derek and his friends were drinking before the accident, and the police said that their car illegally passed someone on the road and hit a patch of black ice. Zachary Mendoza's mom, Jackie, had purchased the vodka found in Derek's car on the night he died, and was charged with a misdemeanor.
It's been almost three years since Derek's death, and though Farrah is ready to move on, she'll always miss Sophia's father. "He would have been loving and supportive and taken care of both of us. When Sophia was born, her face looked just like his, and so did her toes! I wish he would have been there," she told Us Magazine.
"I made Sophia a baby book with notes that he and I wrote to each other. It's a big collection of our relationship," she added. "I have pictures of us going to dances and lots of memories written down to share. I want her to know that he was a happy person who liked to have fun."
We're so glad that Farrah is raising Sophia to know what a great man Derek was!
