DWTS All-Stars: Val and Maksim Chmerkovskiy Fight Back Against Low Judges’ Scores

Watching Kelly Monaco and Valentin Chmerkovskiy’s “Surfer” Flamenco on the Dancing With the Stars All-Stars Semifinals Performance Show, we thought high scores were coming. It was sharp, fast, sexy, fun, and actually seemed to fit its insane theme. The Speedo was a bonus!

But then the judges decided it didn’t have enough Flamenco, saying it was mostly a Paso Doble. Since they had decided Emmitt Smith didn’t have enough Lindy Hop and still gave him straight 9s, we figured they’d do something similar for Kelly. Nope! Carrie Ann Inaba gave the dance an 8. Len Goodman went for a 9. Bruno Tonioli gave it an 8.5, giving them the lowest scores of the first round.

When asked about the scores, Kelly said they’ve been in the bottom before and they’ll fight their way out. Val said, “I think that’s politically correct. I think [the scores are] pretty unfair, but that’s just my opinion. But I think she’s incredible and I want to thank you for an amazing season.” Brooke Burke-Charvet said they had another dance coming, so they should keep things positive. But why not be honest, when you’re upset?

Meanwhile, Val’s brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, tweeted, “I wonder if any of the judges know what Flamenco really is?!?” He later added, “WTH ARE THOSE SCORES!?!?!?!? I'm almost sorry that Val's last name is #Chmerkovskiy !” Ouch! Does Maks think his bro got a raw deal because they are both Chmerkovskiys? We know Maks has had a difficult relationship with the judges in the past.

How do you feel about Kelly and Val’s Flamenco? Were they scored fairly or underscored?

Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays and Tuesdays on ABC.
