The Voice’s Bryan Keith on His Hurricane Sandy-Inspired Performance and What’s Next: “You Will [See Headbanging]” — Exclusive

Last night's live show brought plenty of emotion-fueled performances from The Voice's Top 10 — but one hit close to home for an entire city. Team Adam’s Bryan Keith sang Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” to honor those devastated by Hurricane Sandy, including his own family.

Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the soulful singer on the red carpet, where he talked about last night’s performances and his surprising plans for the future.

Wetpaint Entertainment: How do you feel about your performance? You looked super relaxed and in the zone up there.

Bryan Keith: I was really proud of it. Just to be able to sing a Billy Joel song on stage, on TV in front of millions of people was something I’d only dreamed about. I was able to do it tonight and it was all just heart and soul. That’s why I looked so comfortable up there. I feel like a different person on stage so it just came out the way I wanted it to.

Is that a song that you’ve had in your back pocket that you’ve wanted to sing for a while and had been talking to Adam about?

Yeah definitely. He mentioned to me before that I had a Billy Joel and Sinatra thing going on so to just be able to do Billy Joel and make him proud as well and all of the other coaches … I was just blown away.

Did you have the Sandy aftermath in mind when you picked it for this week?

Yeah absolutely. Some of the contestants here suffered a lot of damages and things like that from the storm. Luckily my family was OK. We didn’t have power for a few weeks so that was pretty tough and I was out here. New York has never experienced anything like that before so for me to be out here and watch that on the news was just crazy so this is my love letter to New York City.

Blake told you that you remind of Michael Buble. Is that the ultimate compliment?

Well I think it’s awesome. Michael Buble isn’t much older than me I think and so he has that old-school, old soul kind of thing going on and I’m all about that. I feel like a lot of the new stuff is kind of robotic and brainwashing in a way, so this is me bringing something back that kids who never gave this a chance are now listening to through me so I feel really proud of that.

Do you feel like you found your niche with this type of song?

I kind of want to get a little bit more aggressive coming up, so we’ll see what happens. I might come out with some heavier rock and roll stuff.

Anything you’re tossing around with your coach?

I’m thinking about maybe some Metallica or get some fun Green Day kind of thing going on. I could do a lot so I’m hoping that they let me show more of that and that the votes will keep me on the show and that I’ll have the chance to do it.

If you do something like Metallica, will we see some headbanging and some rock moves up there?

Definitely. Yes you will.

Do you feel like you finally got a chance to really show America who you are and give them a little bit of your background with that song choice tonight?

I really think that people got a taste of where my spirit is — in New York spirit and old classic rock spirit and bringing it out through me, I think that people can see that. Those are big shoes to feel and I think I did it tonight.

Are you confident going into the results show tomorrow?

I feel really confident. Just singing with honesty and realness, I think that people relate to that so much and that’s what they want to keep seeing so hopefully they vote.
