Fiona Apple Cancels Tour to Be There For Dying Dog: “She’s My Best Friend”
What's more heartbreaking than saying goodbye to a member of your family?
Fiona Apple announced on her website that she's canceling the South American portion of her tour to be there for her ailing dog — a nearly 14-year-old pit bull named Janet, whom Fiona called "my best friend and my mother and my daughter, my benefactor" and the one "who taught me what love is."
Fiona adopted Janet as a 4-month-old puppy, after the pit bull had been used as a bait dog in dogfights. A tumor in Janet's chest has been growing in the past two years, slowing her down and bringing her to the end of her life. Fiona wrote that the change was huge when she got home from the last leg of her U.S. tour. "I just can't leave her now, please understand," Fiona wrote. "If I go away again, I'm afraid she'll die and I won't have the honor of singing her to sleep, of escorting her out."
Fiona added that Janet has been "the most consistent relationship of my adult life, and that is just a fact."
Good for her for being there for her baby, to help her through the end. May Janet have a swift and painless passing, surrounded by love.
