Glee’s Amber Riley: Casting Directors Told Me to Lose Weight

Glee’s Amber Riley (Mercedes) stars on an uber-popular show and recently made her NYC stage debut, but that doesn’t mean that the road to Hollywood success has been easy for her.

Amber who made her Big Apple stage debut on November 14 in Cotton Club Revue breaks down in tears on MTV’s This Is How I Made It when discussing the professional roadblocks she’s faced through the years.

"Hollywood is a very hard place to be in," Amber says. "It really is. Being the person I am, you know, the size I am, being a woman, being a black woman, there's not a lot of roles for us."

"I was being offered the girl who sits in the corner and eats all day," she says of her pre-Glee opportunities. "The girl who committed suicide because she was fat. I never wanted to play a character that hated herself. I wanted people to know that those aren't the only roles for people like me, normal girls."

"Going to the auditions and having the casting director say, 'You need to lose a little weight,’" Amber continues. "I didn't understand why people couldn't accept me for who I was. And the rejection started wearing on my self-esteem."

Amber has dropped two dress sizes this year but says she won’t do anything dangerous just to fit a mold. "I'm not going to conform, and hurt myself, and do something crazy to be a size 2,” she says. “My parents always instilled knowing that you’re beautiful, that you’re fearfully and wonderfully made, and that you know who you are."

We love Amber, and we’re proud of her for speaking so openly. We predict nothing but great things in her future!
