X Factor’s CeCe Frey Remembers Sister Kelsey in Thanksgiving Performance: “My Guardian Angel”
Pardon us while we ugly-cry while screen-printing “CeCe Is My Queen” t-shirts, because The X Factor finalist just bared her soul to live audiences tonight. Turns out, CeCe Frey lost her sister, Kelsey, in 1991. Kelsey, CeCe’s big sister, had cerebral palsy — and every year, in her honor, the Frey family decorates the Christmas tree purple, Kelsey’s favorite color.
CeCe, showing amazing composure while discussing such a devastating personal tragedy, explained her memory of her sister’s death. “She died at home. my mom and dad held her hand.” Every year, the family decorates the Christmas tree in Kelsey’s favorite color, purple. “We add another purple ribbon [to the tree] every year that she would have been with us. Kelsey is the sister I never really got to know, but. I’ve always had that big sister, I’ve always had her around.”
On November 21, 2012, CeCe dedicated Bette Midler’s “Wind Beneath My Wings” to Kelsey. The most touching part? Her parents flew all the way from Decatur, Illinois, to watch as their daughter remembered her sister. “My family’s here and I just want you to know that I love you and I just hope I made you very proud tonight,” CeCe said in closing after her performance.
The judges were wowed by CeCe’s emotional performance. Even Simon Cowell, who hasn’t yet been a CeCe believer, told her, “I really like you, and I hope the public keep you in the competition.”
