No Lea Michele’s Rachel in Glee Season 4, Episode 7! Was It a Mistake?

We saw plenty of characters in tonight’s Season 4, Episode 7: “Dynamic Duets.” Jake (Jacob Artist), Marley (Melissa Benoist) and Ryder (Blake Jenner) had plenty of drama. Blaine (Darren Criss) had a ton of scenes. Finn (Cory Monteith) got a fair amount of screentime. Sebastian (Grant Gustin) came back. And we even got the chance to meet a new character — Hunter (Nolan Gerard Funk) the Warbler.

But do you know who we didn't see at all during the entire episode... not even once? Rachel (Lea Michele).

Granted, Glee is an ensemble show. Yet if any one character had to be chosen as the star, it’s no doubt that Rachel would be the one. She sings more solos and gets more screentime than any other character.

Is all of that starting to change? Glee already did one entirely Rachel-free episode this season, and it was just two weeks ago. Is this the beginning of a new trend? And if so, are you on board with it?

Glee has plenty of interesting characters, and we love getting the chance to get a closer look at their lives. But on the other hand, Rachel is Glee. If she and Kurt (Chris Colfer)
— where was Kurt tonight, anyway? — continue getting less screentime, it’s possible that Glee as a whole will suffer without them.

What do you think: Is Glee making a mistake with its (pardon the pun) new direction?
