Can Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart Survive the Cheating Scandal? A Psychologist Weighs In

Now that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart are back together, how likely is it that they’ll stay together? Is it possible for them to forgive and forget? To rebuild that trust?

Research psychologist Peggy Drexler, Ph.D. — a Cornell professor, gender scholar, and author — wrote a blog for the Huffington Post about post-affair marriages in light of the Gen. Petraeus scandal, but her thoughts can also be applied to “Robsten.”

She explains that the fallout of an affair often extends deeper than hurt and jealousy — often eroding one’s own sense of identity. “My life and his life were this single thing,” a woman Drexler cites says. “All of a sudden everything I believed about that life turned out to be a lie. The foundation I thought was strong just washed away. If the last nine years weren't true, what is true now? Who am I?”

Drexler also points out that too many factors exist to accurately predict the fate of a post-affair relationship: the length of the affair, the identity of the other person involved, the amount of intimacy, the reasons behind the infidelity, etc.

But she also states that men and women view affairs differently, according to multiple studies. Men seem to be more affected by sexual affairs, whereas women are affected by emotional ones.

If that’s the case, Kristen’s level of emotional attachment with the “other man” — Snow White director Rupert Sanders — could factor in heavily.

Drexler concludes the piece by offering advice to couples dealing with infidelity. First, she says, sever all ties with the other party. Then, be “brutally honest” with each other and get to the cause. And keep talking to repair the damage, but only if both partners are equally committed to salvaging the relationship.

Rob and Kristen appear to be happy together, so perhaps they spent the two months they were apart following advice like this. Here’s hoping!
