DWTS All-Stars Finale: Did Shawn and Derek Make a Mistake With Their Controversial Quickstep?

They knew the judges wouldn’t like it. And the judges didn’t like it. On the Dancing With the Stars Season 15 Finals: Performance Show, Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough chose to redo their Iconic Quickstep from Week 3. They were called out for breaking hold the first time they did that routine, and they made the conscious decision to break hold (and do lifts) again. They went for audience appeal/standing ovations over judges’ scores. Shawn said it was one of their last times dancing together and they wanted to have fun and continue dedicating this season to their fans.

They judges weren’t happy. Carrie Ann Inaba said it’s a fan favorite and fantastic routine but she was sad that they decided not to follow the rules. It was the same thing they did last time and she was disappointed. Len Goodman saw more body contact in this routine, but they aren’t allowed to break hold. They also aren’t allowed to do lifts, which they did. “You leave me nowhere to go,” he lamented. Bruno Tonioli said all season, Shawn and Derek have taken risks and pushed the boundaries. What they have achieved is sensational. The judges’ scores are bound by the rules, he said, but it takes nothing away from their achievement.

Carrie Ann gave them a 9, Len gave them an 8.5 and Bruno gave them a 9.5. Their total score was 27 out of 30, which put them behind both of the other couples going into the Super-Sized Freestyle round. Granted, Shawn and Derek had an ace up their sleeve with The Fierce Five dancing in their Freestyle, but do you think they made a mistake by re-doing a risky routine and not changing it up to get higher scores?
