The Voice’s Amanda Brown: “I’m Torn” Between Rock and My Roots — Exclusive

Last night on The Voice live shows, Amanda Brown tackled a song that plenty of contestants have performed in the past — Adele’s “Someone Like You.” But thus far, no one has attacked the popular tune with such tenacity and creativity.

When Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the Team Adam contestant on the red carpet following last night’s performance, she was eager to talk about her strategy moving forward.

Wetpaint Entertainment: And as you heard from all the coaches, covering an Adele song is a huge undertaking. Were you nervous to do that?

Amanda Brown: I definitely was a little nervous, but this particular version just felt right for me. Always a good judge of that for me is whether or not I can move around during a song and really feel it in my body. I felt that instantly when we tried that second version in rehearsal. I felt it in my body and thought, “This is the right version.” I was proud of that.

Regardless of what happens with The Voice, will you continue to pursue a solo career?

Most definitely. I haven’t done background in a little while. Prior to this show, I [had] been really trying to pursue a solo career and that’s what I am going to continue to do after.

After the “Dream On” week, have you had felt like you’ve needed to outdo that performance, and do you feel like you’ve done it yet?

I don’t feel like I need to outdo that performance, so to speak, because I just feel like that was such an epic song and such a beautiful moment, but I definitely want to continue to challenge myself and bring my A-game to ever single performance. You can never really plan it. You know, I didn’t plan it with “Dream On” — it just happened to be this big moment, and hopefully that happens again.

What did you guys do in rehearsal to make the Adele song your own?

Adam and I, and Paul, who is the MD [music director], kind of had some ideas going into it. Initially, I was like, “Let’s try it with just orchestra.” Paul had worked out an arrangement … and when I started singing, it just didn’t really have the impact that I wanted it to have, so we talked about going in the complete opposite realm. We were just jamming out really and it came about. Sometimes that’s how things work.

What would you like to do in the coming weeks? Anything you’d like to perform?

I’m a bit torn between sticking in the realm that I’ve been in, which is this alternative rock realm, and paying tribute to my roots a bit, so we’ll see.

Out of all the other contestants, whose performance did you like the most?

Everyone is so good. I think everyone did an awesome job. Of course, me and Cody are besties and I’m a huge Queen fan, so I really loved his performance, and Trevin is my little brother and I’m a huge fan of Whitney Houston. Everyone over all did awesome, though.
