Grey’s Anatomy Speculation: How Will Adele’s Death Affect Meredith?

In a sad but not surprising turn of events, a recent spoiler reveals that Richard's (James Pickens Jr.) wife, Adele (Loretta Devine) will die on Grey's Anatomy in early 2013.

Of course, as soon as we heard the news we started wondering how Adele's death will impact the cast. We've already thought about what it might mean for Richard, and now we want to think about what it could mean to Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), too.

1. It could bring her closer to Richard. This tragedy could renew their bond, especially if Richard ends up leaning on Meredith for support. After all, she's one of the few people who also really understands what it means to lose a loved one to Alzheimer's.

2. Will it bring up bad memories? We're wondering how Mer will react to losing someone else to Alzheimer's — after all, she has a complicated history of her own with Adele. Will it bring up memories of her mother, or perhaps of her more recent loss, Lexie (Chyler Leigh)? And what about the bad memories about the time she almost destroyed Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) career trying to help Adele?

3. Could it inspire her to do research? We miss Mer in research mode. Could losing Adele, and perhaps confronting what happened, get her inspired again, or has that ship sailed?

How do you think Adele's death will affect Mer? Let us know in the comments below.
