Grey's Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy Season 9 Spoiler: Is Richard the Chief Again?

Recently, Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd) posted this photo of a future Grey's Anatomy scene. It features almost the entire cast sitting around the conference table. We've already wondered about what's going on in the scene, but now we want to draw attention to a specific odd things about this photo: Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) is sitting at the head of the table.

Of course, the head of the table is usually reserved for the person in charge. So why is Richard, and not Owen (Kevin McKidd), in that place? Especially because Owen is in the scene (Kevin is off to the left taking a picture with Sarah Drew [April Kepner]).

The first thing that jumped to mind is that Owen loses his role as chief at some point. It's not a ridiculous idea. After all, the hospital is being sued for a ton of money, and in situations like that people in power can lose their positions. Maybe Webber, as a former chief, steps in (yeah, we know why he lost the job in the first place but, eh. It's still not impossible on this show).

There are plenty of other possibilities. Maybe they're meeting about a case Richard is in charge of. Maybe Owen's place is at the other end of the table. Maybe James Pickens Jr. just happens to be sitting in that chair. One thing we know is it can't be a flashback — several of the new characters are in the scene.

What do you think?
