Promo for Glee Season 4, Episode 9: In-Depth Analysis of “Swan Song”
Talk about a cliffhanger! When we last left the New Directions, Marley (Melissa Benoist) had just collapsed onstage during Sectionals. We have no idea if she’s okay. We have no idea who even won the competition... but we’re getting a sinking feeling that the New Ds might not even have a chance!
Waiting until next week to watch Season 4, Episode 9: “Swan Song” feels like an eternity, but luckily, we have the promo for the episode to watch — and watch again — in search of clues. We’re breaking down the promo: second by second, frame by frame, looking for insight about what’s going to happen. Here’s a look at what we’ve managed to uncover.
00:01 — The New Directions are still in their Sectionals outfits. Everyone looks worried. Blaine’s (Darren Criss) eyes are full of shock. Kitty (Becca Tobin) looks down at the floor quietly. “Oh, this is bad.”
00:02 — Finn rushes up to the group. “What happened?” he asks. Will’s (Matthew Morrison) reply is urgent. “Leaving the stage mid-competition is risking immediate disqualification.” So is that it? Were the New Directions disqualified from Sectionals? It’s hard to tell for sure, but it sounds like they just might be!
00:07 — “It’s a time to fight.” Finn (Cory Monteith) and Sue (Jane Lynch) stand in the McKinley hallway. She’s holding the New Directions’ Nationals trophy from last year. He grabs it and tries to jerk it away from her.
00:09 — Cassandra (Kate Hudson) menacingly stares Rachel down. “You won’t be able to keep up,” she tells her. “I’ve kept up with you,” Rachel (Lea Michele) tells her. A sultry brunette in a sexy, low-cut black top stands in the background. Could this be Anna-Marie, the bitchy new ballet dancer who’s about to become Rachel’s newest rival?
00:13 — Brittany and Sam stand by their lockers. Oh no. This doesn’t look good! She stares up at him. “You’re the only one that makes me smile.” She leans in for a kiss. Their noses touch. The camera cuts away.
WHAT? How did that just happen?? Come on, Britt. We refuse to believe that Sam is the only one that makes you smile. What about Santana (Naya Rivera)?? We’re really not sure if we’re going to be able to forgive you for kissing him.
00:16 — Whoopi Goldberg is back! “And if he is ready, Mr. Kurt Hummel will perform for us,” she says. Kurt (Chris Colfer) is re-auditioning for NYADA! And from what we’ve heard, he’s singing “Being Alive” from the Stephen Sondheim musical Company, one of the three songs Madame Tibideaux says she hears all the time. Will this performance be enough for him to make it in?
00:20 — Will is back at McKinley, at least for now. He and Finn have a heart-to-heart in the boys’ locker room. “When was the last time you felt this good?” Will asks him, “Cared this much?”
00:24 — Sue, however, is singing a different tune. She sits in her office, her resolve firm. “The New Directions are finished.” So did they get disqualified, after all? And what will become of the club if they did? Next week can’t get here fast enough!
