Grey’s Anatomy Speculation: 3 Reasons Why Cristina and Owen Are Not Getting Divorced

There was more than one bombshell on last night’s Grey's Anatomy (Season 9, Episode 7: "I Was Made for Lovin’ You"). The biggest one was Meredith’s (Ellen Pompeo) news that she’s pregnant, which we’re still over the moon about. But the other is Owen’s (Kevin McKidd) proclamation that he wants a divorce from Cristina (Sandra Oh).

Here are three reasons why we just don’t think that’s going to happen.

Shonda Rhimes’s comments. Showrunner Shonda Rhimes has been pulling for this couple for several seasons now. And in one of her most recent interviews, she said that in the beginning of Season 9, everything between them would be very “unsettling.” But, “it’s going to get fairly romantic as we watch them find their way back to one another.” That sounds an awful lot like Owen and Cristina will eventually work through their issues and come together as a couple.

Owen’s reasons for the divorce are shady. He figures out that the reason the hospital board is being so supportive of him is because they believe the victims’ case against the hospital will be dropped because he is married to one of the victims, Cristina. They’re using him to make sure the crash survivors don’t get what they’re owed. So Owen thinks if he falls on his sword and takes the blame (by signing those papers acknowledging he knew the plane manufacturing company had a sketchy record), he’ll be helping Cristina and the other survivors. Of course, all this means is that he cares so much about his wife that he’s willing to end his career for her.
So obviously the love is still there.

Cristina has changed. And Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), Bailey (Chandra Wilson), and almost everyone else can see it except for Owen. But Cristina’s time in Minnesota, and especially with Dr. Thomas, has softened her sharper edges. She’s no longer so dismissive of other people (namely the interns) and their weaknesses. She’s more willing to compromise. Once she and Owen realize this together, they should, as Shonda says, “find their way back to one another.”
