Is The 5-Second Rule True? Watch An Explanation of How Quickly Germs Stick to Dropped Food (VIDEO)

We hate to share bad news, but in this case the bad news will help keep you and your little ones healthier. But it might also help you resist the extra calories that fall victim to gravity — so it’s really a win-win!

Turns out The Five Second Rule — you know, the one we’ve used to rationalize eating food that’s fallen on the floor — may be one that you want to rethink. The brainiacs behind VSauce put together a super-informative, super-detailed video of just how much fecal matter, infectious disease, and bacteria in general are lurking on your floors — and how fast they can adhere to dropped food, wet or dry. Turns out there’s a lot of germs everywhere and it takes far less than five seconds for them to turn your food into a hospital stay.

The information is un-appetizingly detailed (to say the least), but at least we’ll never look at a dropped donut the same way again.
