Blake Shelton Dishes About His Remaining Contestants: “Terry [McDermott] Finally Had a Great Moment”

Voice coach Blake Shelton is sitting pretty going into the semi-finals next week. His two remaining contestants, Cassadee Pope and Terry McDermott, make up half of the Top 4, and his faux-nemesis, Adam Levine, has lost all of his contestants.

But Blake certainly isn’t resting. The country crooner, who recently aired his own NBC Christmas special, knows what it takes for a contestant to win The Voice. His finalist, Jermaine Paul, took home last season’s title.

When Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the 2012 CMA Entertainer of the Year on the red carpet, he talked about the long road ahead, his remaining contestants, and being “shocked” about Adam.

Wetpaint Entertainment: Congrats on getting your entire team through to the semi-finals! Now that you are so close, what will you do to get them into the finals?

Blake Shelton: You know what? I can’t say it enough, but communication is just so important at this point on The Voice. If you don’t understand who your artist is and what they want to do, then you’re going to make a mistake because it’s amazing how one little microscopic moment during a performance can derail somebody’s chances to move forward … Somebody may get up there and sound good and be in the pocket and sound right, but there’s just those things where you go, “Do they really believe what they are singing? Are they being an artist right now, or are they being a singer?”

What do you think America is looking for in a Voice winner?

At this point, I think America is looking for an artist somebody that can create and I love that about this show. As a musician, that’s been important to me all along, and [to] the other three coaches, is to know that America is really soaking in what they see. It’s not just about who can hit the biggest notes — it’s about who can actually sell a song, and that’s why there is a music industry. There are a lot of important, great artists out there in the world that weren’t the best singers, but they made you believe and feel what they were singing, and that’s what we are down to at this point.

Are you shocked that Team Adam is no more?

I’m a little bit shocked. Adam is a smart guy. He knows what he’s doing, and that just shows you that you can’t tell what’s gonna happen [on The Voice]. It’s those little tiny moments that happen that America picks up on. I don’t know what the difference was in voting, but I bet it was all pretty close this week. Some artists are carrying a lot of momentum with them, too — they are favorites because of things they did in the past, and I think Cassadee is one of those. Cassadee remains a favorite because she made her presence known a couple of weeks ago, and she’s followed up with that week after week; she hasn’t disappointed one time yet. Every time she’s performed since she did “Over You,” her iTunes sales have been through the roof.

Terry finally had a great moment last night at the exact right time, and now he’s an important player in this competition. Before you can get down to this final four, you better have some things figured out, and for Cee Lo and me, hopefully it’s because we’ve listened and we’ve paid a lot of attention to who our artists are and what they’re good at.
