Maksim Chmerkovskiy on Kelly Monaco and Brother Val: “There’s No Fake Anything” — Exclusive
After seasons of butting heads with the judges onDancing With the Stars, fan-favorite dance proMaksim Chmerkovskiy got a chance to see what it's like on the other side of the table while judging dancers for a new AOL dance video during an open call in NYC this weekend.
He also gave us his perspective onVal Chmerkovskiy and Kelly Monaco's relationship and the intense fan reaction, and we thought his answer was interesting enough to highlight here.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Fans were a bit obsessed with Val and Kelly's showmance, romance — whatever it was. As his brother, what was your response to seeing that reaction to them?
Maksim Chmerkovskiy: We're not a TV family, you know? We're very real. We're dancers, that's what our talent is. For everybody out there, they'll never know what the reality is, unless we decide to expose it. But [I] just want to assure them that there's no fake anything when it comes to me and Val. He's even more so. He hasn't been on TV long enough to get jaded, even if he wanted to, which we both don't. It's so difficult for me, personally — it takes a lot to remember what I said. So I'd rather be always honest and always straightforward. Because that way I don't have to remember, and I don't have to be consistent.
We don't lie, we don't portray things, we don't put stuff out that's not real. How the public decides what it is, I don't know, but we're not going to be running around with a flagpole going "oh my god I'm dating her, or not." They're having a blast. I'm super happy for [Val]. I'm super happy for Kelly, she's an incredible person. Getting to know her was an amazing experience. She's so real. Together they were amazing. Whatever this is going to end up being I'm sure is going to be up to them.
