Trevin Hunte Talks Walking in Jennifer Hudson’s Footsteps and Touring With Christina Aguilera — Exclusive
Though plenty of Voice contestants have gone on to tour with one of the celebrity coaches, none have received an offer from pop diva Christina Aguilera — until last night. Team Cee Lo’s Trevin Hunte gave an emotionally moving performance of “And I Am Telling You” from Dreamgirls, causing the judges to get to their feet and the audience to erupt in roars.
Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with the contestant on the red carpet after his performance to talk about his future on the show — and the potential of touring with the pop diva!
Wetpaint Entertainment: What did you think of your two performances tonight?
Trevin Hunte: Coming into tonight, I was very skeptical about the first one [“Walking on Sunshine”], only because it wasn’t natural for me. It wasn’t something I would have chosen on a regular basis, but I just followed whatever Cee Lo told me to do; I feel like he would never steer me wrong. But I was scared about both performances. I’m always scared, but I definitely felt that I did the best I knew how to do.
How did you feel while you were singing the Jennifer Hudson song?
Singing that song was my way of saying, “I’m not going anywhere.” I’m here to stay in this competition. I did it the way that Trevin could do it, and I can’t be mad at that.
You had a lot of fireworks behind you on stage!
I know! I can’t wait to see it. I really wasn’t paying attention to that because I was so wrapped up in the song and just performing it. I’m just happy about the outcome of the entire performance.
Christina [Aguilera] said she would like to take you on the road. What do you think of that?
That’s definitely something I would cherish my entire life, just the comment that she made, because I look up to her so much as an artist, a performer, and even as a person. She’s a great person, so for her to say that means the world to me. I feel so honored.
Could you see yourself opening for Christina sometime?
That would be a great feeling. I could see myself doing that.
Judges and other contestants have said you’ve really come out of your shell. How has The Voice helped you grow as a person?
Being on this show and progressing from the blind auditions to the Top 6 definitely gave me a boost in my confidence. Gracing the stage every week and having so many people’s love and support, getting great advice from the coaches — it just allows me to step outside my box and makes me feel good.
