Les Miserables Weight Changes: Who Stopped Eating For 13 Days? Who Ate Everything to Gain 30 Pounds?
Every time we hear about Anne Hathaway's Les Miserables diet it sounds worse and worse. First she was eating just 500 calories a day, but her rep said that was an exaggeration. But in a long interview with The Hollywood Reporter, along with the rest of the cast, Anne's Fantine prep sounds even more extreme.
According to THR, Anne immersed herself in the role, hiring a researcher who helped her find books on sexual slavery and losing weight in two stages. She lost 10 pounds over three weeks before the shoot, and an extra 15 pounds during production. “I just had to stop eating,” Anne said, “all for a total of 13 days' shooting.”
Yikes. But she wasn't alone. To play Jean Valjean, Hugh Jackman had to lose 15 pounds to play the convict at the start of the film, then gain 30 more to show the character's later success. “I was eating anything I could,” Hugh told THR. “If ever there are any outtakes, there’s a lot of me burping.”
We'll try to keep the burping out of our minds when we watch the film, which opens Christmas Day. Are you planning to see it?
