The X Factor’s Emblem3: “We Like to Get Naked and Dance” Exclusive

Emblem3 has been making fangirling a sport since the three righteous Cali (by way of Sequim, WA) dudes made their X Factor debut. Although we first met the high-energy trio through one of their original songs, we’ve only seen them sing pop songs since. Wetpaint Entertainment caught up with Drew, Wes, and Keaton to chat about how they’ve had to bend their style to suit the show, and what they’d do to get through to the finale.

What is going on?! You’re signing Gangnam Style and Keaton just took his shirt off.
Drew: We like to get naked and dance, what’s wrong with that?
Wesley: Basically it’s our way of life.

What did you guys think of the fan song?
Wesley: I loved how it turned out, and it was my favorite out of the three options that they had, so I was excited about the one they had chosen.

Did all three songs feel sort of right?
Together: No, that was the only one.

What performance would you say feels most like you?
Drew: Our first audition, our original song.

But for the past however many weeks you’ve had to sing other people’s songs.
Wesley: I would say our first live performance that we loved was “One Day.”
Keaton: We actually got to choose that song, so that’s probably the one we love the most.

Do you think there will be an opportunity for you to sing an original song?
Wesley: We have no idea.
Keaton: We’re pushing for it. It’s up to Simon.
Wesley: It’s risky, because they say that if you play an original that you play perfect and awesome, a song that everyone knows, even if you suck at playing it, it will get more votes.

I feel like this might be the hardest on you guys because you do original music.
Drew: You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit. That’s the rules.

But you guys do?
Wesley: No, when we get a song we’ll either say straight up no, we don’t think it would work for our image or we bite our lips and take it.

Whose comments are you most worried about?
Keaton: Well, Demi’s the only one that had anything negative to say, so I feel like we should say her.
Wesley: If LA actually said something bad…
Drew: …I would feel bad.
Wesley: With Demi, I think she’s just trying to find something negative. She’s getting…
Keaton: I think she’s just getting really competitive with her act. She has one act left, so it makes sense that she would not be dishing out the good compliments to everybody.

Does it matter at this point what they say?
Wesley: They probably have some influence over people at home voting, but honestly, it’s just us and our performance and how we did.

So what’s the final push for the last two weeks?
Wesley: We’re going to work like crazy and kill it for the next performances, if we make it through, of course, and we’ll bring out instruments hopefully, And we will smile.

Wesley: Of course. If we make it to the last round we’ll be fully naked.
