Cody Belew Reveals His Voice Season 3 Regrets and Plans For a “Banging-Ass Record”

After Team Cee Lo’s Cody “Bam-Bam” Belew departed The Voice a few weeks ago, we were heartbroken. Although this season is filled of talented performers who ultimately outshone him vocally, we were still hoping to see him make it a bit further.

However, in a recent chat with TVLine, the charming Southern singer explained that every performance was a calculated move, evolving throughout the season by exposing a new “layer” of himself each week. While it likely wasn’t in his game plan to get eliminated, he said that his next career moves will follow that road map, too.

“As far as the evolution of me in the competition … that was intentional on my part. I was very plugged-in and aware that the audience needed to have a storyline to follow,” he explained. “If I just came right out of the gate with ‘Crazy in Love,’ I would’ve come across like [fellow Team Cee Lo contestant] DOMO did.”

The poor “Lady Gaga of China” didn’t make it too far, losing to Cody in the battle rounds, so it’s clear that former Arkansas pig farmer definitely had a leg up, and he cites a lack of “overconfidence” for that.

“I’m not that person who is overly confident and cocky, but I’m very, very sure of myself when it comes to the performances that I’m capable of,” he continued. “So I wanted to layer those week by week. If I gave too much away at the beginning, where would I go from there?”

As for what’s next? He wants to channel his “Crazy in Love” performance for a “danceable” album.

“My first album, God willing there will be one, will rely heavily on iconic beats. I want it to be danceable, but I don’t want to get into that techno that’s kind of taken over pop music,” he explained. “Think classic beat-focused music that people just want to turn up and sing along to, and then go see in concert.”

But wait, there’s more! Country, that is.

“I eventually want to pay homage to my country roots. I’d love to do that playfully, maybe in the way that Madonna did when she sang ‘Don’t Tell Me,’ and went through her cowgirl stage,” he dished. “But I hope that there will be a time that I can hit on all the genres that I love, because I think we’ve seen with artists like Adele that the genre specifics may not be such a big deal anymore. As long as it’s a banging-ass record, people will buy it.”
