Hallmark Apologizes For Distasteful 13-Year-Old Girl’s Birthday Card Wishing For Bigger Boobies

After an author posted an image of a British Hallmark card on Twitter, an Internet firestorm erupted in outrage over the card’s derogatory, sexist message. “You're 13 today! If you had a rich boyfriend he'd give you diamonds and rubies. Well, maybe next year you will — when you've bigger boobies!" Ooof. Hallmark, we thought we knew you better than that!

We don’t need explain why this card is a bad idea, but let’s do it anyway, shall we? It reinforces negative stereotypes for both men and women, and suggests to adolescent girls that the way to get a rich boyfriend is with large breasts. Upon its circulation around the web, Hallmark released this statement on their website:

This card was printed over 15 years ago by Arnold Barton before Hallmark UK acquired that brand. This card has not been reproduced since and we are surprised that a copy was still available for purchase in a retail store. We agree the card is not appropriate; we apologize on behalf of Arnold Barton and will do our best to track down any copies remaining in circulation.

We love seeing a company take responsibility for a bad call, even if it’s just a reminder for how far we’ve come with a current generation of smart, socially-conscious women!
