“I try to speak frankly but as kind as possible,” Mariah said. “But not sugar-coating...that won’t do anyone any good.”
Much like her controversial cohort Nicki Minajsaid herself, Mariah has felt genuine bonds with many of the contestants.
“I get really attached to certain people for different reasons, whether it’s a story or mainly the talent,” said the singer.
She identifies with how overwhelming the music business is for a novice, but that doesn’t mean she would have taken the same avenues had the show been around for her big break.
“I’m glad I didn’t do a show like this,” Mariah said. “I would have hated it!”
She added that the most important part of performing is being yourself, and that’s what she tries to impart to the Idol hopefuls. If you can believe it, four auditioners took on Mimi’s songs. When asked about this daring (read: possibly stupid) move, Mariah said she just tries to treat it as if they are singing anyone’s song.
When it came to deciding whether to be a part of the Idol machine, Mariah admits that she was hesitant, but husband Nick Cannon was the one who convinced her.
