Homeland Season 2 Finale: Did Brody Do It?

If you don’t know what “Did Brody Do It?” means, you best move along to something else. Now.

At the beginning of tonight’s Season 2 finale of Homeland, assassin Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) opts to let Brody (Damian Lewis) live, because according to Quinn, Brody’s not the bad guy. Soon after, a terrorist attack strikes Vice President Walden’s funeral service, courtesy of Brody’s SUV.

Right before the SUV wreaks havoc, Brody, who’d left the funeral with Carrie (Claire Danes), innocently remarks that it’s odd that his car has been moved to outside the building in which the service is being held.

After he and Carrie come to (they were close to the attack), Brody immediately claims he’s not the perpetrator. We believe him: This is most likely Abu Nazir’s final posthumous act, engineered cleverly without Brody’s knowledge — especially given that the responsible party has leaked that damning confessional video to news outlets.

If he’s lying, Brody is sneakier and more underhanded than Carrie has ever realized — and he’s still very much a terrorist.

But Dana’s (Morgan Saylor) stance, coupled with Damian Lewis’s acting, is pretty persuasive: She saw Brody the day he donned that infamous suicide vest, and this day — the day of the funeral attack — her painfully conflicted father doesn’t act nearly as guilty and apprehensive. At least in Dana’s eyes.

Still, we don’t know the depth of Brody’s pathology; eight years is a long time to have spent in captivity. At the very least, we don’t fault Carrie one of “the smartest and the dumbest C.I.A. officers (Saul’s words, not ours) — for being convinced enough to help her ginger lover elude arrest.

Has Carrie abetted a terrorist, or is she doing the right thing? So many questions! And we won’t have any answers until Season 3 premieres next fall.

That’s a long wait.
