Castle “Queen” Tamala Jones on Her Love Affair With Acting and the Inspiration Behind Lanie Parish
You already know her as Lanie Parish, but how much do you know about actress Tamala Jones, the actress who plays the smart and sassy medical examiner on Castle?
The Philadelphia Sunday SUN sat down to interview the star, getting the scoop on Tamala’s experience on the show while dishing out some personal trivia.
Tamala has quite the varied acting resume, from playing Maya Angelou’s great-grandmother in How to Make an American Quilt, to a teenage mother facing an abusive spouse on ABC’s Dangerous Minds. When asked what interested her about Castle, Tamala explained it was “playing a doctor because it was something that [she’d] never done before.” (And Nathan Fillion, as she’s followed his entire career!)
Though she doesn’t have any tidbits to share about Lanie’s possible romances this season — show creator Andrew Marlowe is “very secretive about what he has in store" — she did explain how she prepared for her role as Dr. Lanie: “I read a lot of coroner books [and] watched a lot of reality crime shows like Dr G: Medical Examiner, The First 48, and Forensic Files."
A self-described “silly, crazy girl living in a woman’s body," Tamala loves comedy and was creative from an early age. Her earliest memory is of “making up stories and playing them out in the backyard,” and she declared that her best business decision was at 14 when she decided to go into acting.
But when asked which historical figure she would like to meet, she gave a more serious answer: “Abraham Lincoln. I really want to talk to him and understand why he wanted to free the slaves. The real reason, not the one stated in the history books."
As for those who want to follow in her footsteps, Tamala advised: “Never give up. Always be yourself. Don’t feel like you have to change who you are to be successful. As long as you’re true to yourself and never give up, you will succeed.”
Those wise words definitely worked out for Tamala. We can’t wait to see more of her and her no-nonsense character on Castle this season.
