Immediately after the finale, he hit the red carpet with a smile on his face, sharing his favorite memories from this season with Wetpaint Entertainment and revealing his surprising career plan.
Wetpaint Entertainment: Congratulations! Second place is no small feat.
Terry McDermott: Yeah. That will do!
How are you feeling?
I feel pretty good. It was a lot of hard work to get here, and I feel that second place was just about right.
What’s the plan now?
The plan is to get back into business making music. It’s been a wonderful experience on the show. It’s been a wonderful experience performing, but ultimately I want to get back to creativity, which really helps you connect with the song when you pour your own heart and soul into it.
Are you going to take some time off to recharge, or dive right in?
I don’t want to take too long. I don’t think I’ve really ever successfully taken a break from music since I was about 15. It’s my absolute passion in life. It always has been and I suspect it always will be, so no. I’ll take care of Christmas — my son obviously wants us to take care of Christmas — and then I’ll get back to the business of making music.
What was your favorite memory from this season?
It’s got to be performing with Peter Frampton. The duet with Blake last night was great as well. It was wonderful. It was a great way for us to blow off steam and all the stress of it. But there was something about the Frampton experience that will live with me the rest of my life.
How did it feel to go out there tonight and just have fun and not worry about being judged for your performances?
It really was liberating, and I think Cassadee [Pope] and Nicholas [David] felt the same way — we talked about it. We felt like tonight, our responsibility was just to put on a good show and make sure that Season 3 got the send off support that it deserved.
You’ve had amazing support from American fans. What have you been hearing from back home in Scotland?
Nothing but overwhelming support. It’s actually been overwhelming and somewhat surreal. I have the whole nation of Scotland lifting me up on their shoulders. It makes me feel very grateful for that. I’m glad to be Scottish.
We overheard you saying something about getting a tweet from the minster?
I apparently got a tweet from the First Minister of Scotland wishing me well, which is quite remarkable and shows that the show captured the imagination of the public back home. I’m very grateful to them for all the support.
Are you going to go back there and be a hometown hero and do some shows for them?
There’s a rumor that I might get a drink or two bought for me when I get back. If that’s true, then I might go back and put on a show.
You’ll make yourself available at the bar stool?
That’s right. If they want to pick me up at the barstool, I’ll be available for Bar Mitzvahs, etc.
