Hasbro Answers 13-Year-Old’s Petition For Gender-Neutral Easy-Bake Oven

When McKenna Pope’s younger brother Gavyn let her know he’d like an Easy-Bake Oven for Christmas but mentioned that “only girls play with it and... they only put girls in the commercial,” the 13-year-old big sis took action.

McKenna promptly created a petition on, asking Hasbro to promote gender equality by featuring boys as well as girls on their packaging and offering the oven in non-gender specific colors. She received over 45,000 signatures and the 13-year-old activist was even interviewed by CNN. Her stance is that the gender-specific colors and promotional materials send “a clear message: women cook, men work.”

Hasbro released a statement in response to the position saying, “We value input from our consumers and due to the widespread interest in McKenna Pope’s story, we extended an invitation to McKenna and her family to visit Hasbro and meet with our Easy-Bake team.”

McKenna journeyed to Hasbro headquarters on Monday, where she personally delivered her petition signatures and the corporation announced plans for a black and silver Easy-Bake Oven, which will be released in February 2013. McKenna posted on her site after meeting with the toy maker, saying, “I couldn’t be happier with the outcome... With their new product Hasbro is affirming that everyone can cook and I can’t wait to share this gift with my little brother Gavyn.”

While it seems Gavyn will get his Christmas wish — a gender-neutral Easy-Bake Oven come February — we wonder what Santa will bring McKenna. A career in activism perhaps?
