Today was supposed to be the end of the world as we know it — or so we’ve heard. Now that we know we’re all still here and the earth is still spinning, how are you planning on celebrating? We figure we might as well settle in for some darn good — and very fitting — entertainment. So pop some popcorn and pop in one (or five) of our favorite world’s end disaster movies. Then make a toast celebrating the non-Apocalypse!
Deep Impact, 1998 Tagline: Oceans rise. Cities fall. Hope Survive.
Deep Impact, which came out just a few months before Armageddon, tells a nearly identical tale of a comet on a crash course with Earth. This story has a few more layers to it, following several characters on their journey to survive at the end of days.
The Road,2009 Tagline: In a moment the world changed forever.
Starring Viggo Mortensen and Charlize Theron, The Road is a harrowing tale of a father and son trying to survive in post-apocalyptic wasteland. Just a heads-up, this is definitely not a feel-good film but great nonetheless!
I Am Legend, 2007 Tagline: Welcome to Earth. Population 1.
In case you need a little more Will Smith, I Am Legend finds Robert Neville (Will) the sole survivor of a mutant virus. With all of mankind extinct, Robert lives each day desperate for human contact, and fighting for a cure while the undead wait in the shadows.
Probably the most fitting film for the occasion since the story revolves around the day in question, 2012 stars John Cusack and Amanda Peet as ex-spouses struggling to save their family from the cataclysm of this very day.
Wall-E, 2008 Tagline: After 700 years of doing what he was built for — he'll discover what he's meant for.
The heartwarming tale of a robot, left to clean up the mess left on an earth abandoned by mankind. When a reconnaissance robot is sent to find sustainable life on the planet, Wall-E forms a special bond with her.
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, 2012 Tagline: Nice knowing you.
A recent release starring an unusual duo of Steve Carell and Keira Knightley, this flick finds the world again on a crash course with an asteroid. Dodge (Carell) teams up with Penny (Knightley), as they embark on a road trip to fulfill their last wishes. Friendship and hilarity ensue.
Armageddon, 1998 Tagline: For Love. For Honor. For Mankind.
Featuring tough guy Bruce Willis and pretty boy Ben Affleck, this day’s-end drama tells the story of a team of deep core drillers fighting desperately to save humanity from an asteroid the size of Texas. Bonus: It contains the classicLeaving on a Jet Plane farewell from Ben and Liv Tyler. It doesn’t get any better than that!
