Spike Lee: Django Unchained Is “Disrespectful to My Ancestors”

No need to wait for a Django Unchained review from Spike Lee — he’s already sharing his opinion, without having seen the movie.

VIBETV asked the Malcolm X and Do the Right Thing director about Quentin Tarantino’s new film, and Spike said, "I can’t speak on it 'cause I'm not gonna see it. All I'm going to say is that it's disrespectful to my ancestors. That's just me...I'm not speaking on behalf of anybody else."

However, he tweeted a reference to the film after the Vibe story was posted, writing, “American Slavery Was Not A Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It Was A Holocaust. My Ancestors Are Slaves.Stolen From Africa.I Will Honor Them.”

If you check out Spike’s Twitter timeline from December 21 to 22, it’s filled with retweeted responses — some from fans in support of his comments, some disagreeing with him, some respecting his opinion but planning to see the film anyway to make up their own minds. Spike reiterated that he’s not spreading hate against anyone — including the film’s actors, which include longtime collaborator Samuel L. Jackson — or telling anyone else not to see the movie, he’s just sharing his own opinion.

What do you think? Are you planning to see the film or are you also sitting this one out for the same reasons as Spike or for another reason?
