Cassadee Pope Wishes She Sang Original Music on The Voice, Aspires to Be an “Edgier” Taylor Swift
Before Cassadee Pope stepped on the Voice stage, she was fronting pop-punk band Hey Monday, opening for hit bands and playing to sold-out crowds across the country.
Although the Season 3 winner is known for her country crossover covers and unique, rockin’ renditions of pop songs, she admits that she would have loved to have shown America her original music on the show — including the hit songs she wrote with her band and her recent solo material.
“Unfortunately, I couldn’t go out there and sing my original stuff — which would have been the easiest way to show people what I’m about and the kind of music I do,” she told TVLine. “So I just tried to think of the one artist and the one song that I thought truly resembles what I want to do,” she added in reference to her show-stopping performance of Avril Lavigne’s “My Happy Ending.”
But if she had to describe her sound moving forward, she admits that it’s not “full-on country,” but she does want to try out different genres.
“I’ll experiment a little bit with my sound,” she spilled. “But I want to do pop-rock, maybe even cross over into country just a little bit, too, because I know that that’s more common now than it was before.”
Does this mean Cassadee is the next Taylor Swift? Not so fast!
“Taylor Swift is something I’m really scared to compare myself to, but it’s true. I want to do an edgier, less country — well, I’m talking about her past, not now. She’s like, dubstep now,” she told TV Guide with a laugh. “But, you know, an edgier Taylor Swift — not as country, with more mature lyrics and more challenging vocals and melodies.”
