Cassadee Pope Talks Previous Voice Winners’ Success, Admits She “Didn’t Have the Best Voice on the Show”
Cassadee Pope took The Voice by storm, killing it on the iTunes charts week after week until she ultimately took home the Season 3 title.
With her win came a new era for the singing competition show. The previous two winners, Javier Colon and Jermaine Paul, haven’t had much commercial success, but Cassadee is gearing up for quite a career, hitting the ground running with a No. 1 single already under her belt.
However, the young rocker was quick to note that her success on the show was mostly due in part to her iTunes success, and before she started topping the charts, she was worried about having the same fate as the former Voice winners.
“I was worried about [winners’ lack of success] towards the beginning,” she admitted to Entertainment Weekly. “But when I started seeing how much [my music] was catching on on iTunes, it made me realize that maybe they just haven’t found the person that’s going to break into the mainstream world yet. And it’s not the label’s fault, it’s not Javier [Colon] or Jermaine [Paul]’s fault — it’s not anybody’s fault.”
In fact, Cassadee thinks that the new rules in Season 3 not only helped her win, but will foster successful careers for future Voice winners.
“I think they made iTunes such a huge component in the voting process [this year] because they got to see who sells the most records. As a label, what better way is there to scout? Everything that they changed about this season really made a lot of sense — it’s more about relatability than who has the best voice,” she explained. “It’s funny — it’s called The Voice, but I sure as hell didn’t have the best voice on the show. I’ll admit it.”
