Zooey Deschanel: You Don’t Need to Look Anorexic to Be Successful in Hollywood

Zooey Deschanel may be "adorkable," but she's not afraid to call out some of her peers for being "much, much too skinny." Not only does she think it's unhealthy, she says it's unnecessary when it comes to building a successful career, like her own.

The New Girl star is on the February 2013 cover of Glamour; in the interview, she was asked if she feels pressure to look a certain way.

"I don't," Zooey answered. "But actresses have definitely gotten thinner over the course of my lifetime. Women I admired growing up — Debra Winger, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep — were all beautiful and thin, but not too thin. There are a lot of actresses who are unhealthy-skinny — much, much too skinny. You can’t Pilates to that. I’m a very small person, and if I lost 15 pounds, I’d look like them; it’s scary. For young girls, what does that say? You need to look this way to be successful? That’s not true. You do not need to look or be anorexic to be successful in Hollywood. The range of what’s acceptable is larger than what people believe."

That's good to hear, especially from someone who has found success across multiple platforms: TV, film, and even music. But are producers, managers, agents, and casting directors sending the same message to their clients, or are they promoting the scary-skinny look? Hollywood tends to launch fashion and beauty trends for the rest of the country, so if more stars start looking skinny-skinny it sends the message that that's "normal" and the standard to which we should all be compared. We wouldn't complain if the standard included a little more meat on the bones!
