Fred Armisen Explains How He Was “a Terrible Husband” to Mad Men’s Elisabeth Moss
If only all exes would admit fault this easily!
Saturday Night Live and Portlandia comedian Fred Armisen recently talked to Howard Stern about his marriage to Mad Men star Elisabeth Moss. They dated for a year and were married for eight months before the split.
Fred admitted he gets caught up in the beginning of relationships. "I want to be married ... the amount of girls I've lived with right away ... and then somewhere around a year, two years, I get freaked out," he told Howard (via Us Weekly). "Do you feel entitled to more women?" Howard asked. "I don't want to admit that out loud to myself," Fred said, "but that probably is it."
Howard mentioned some quotes from Elisabeth about Fred. "She [said] you're a great actor, but too bad you didn't act like a human being. ... You must have been a terrible husband." Fred replied, "I think I was a terrible husband, I think I'm a terrible boyfriend."
He later added that he feels bad for anyone he's gone out with, because he starts all attentive and then withdraws; "...you sort of get into all the things you think make you weird, like 'I'm really into playing XBOX . . [or my] record collection.' You sort of disappear into the things that you think are just your hobbies." Fred also dated his SNL co-star Abby Elliott and said things ended on "so-so terms." He told Howard his first marriage to English singer Sally Timms was "more for her green card." (But they were married from 1998 to 2004!)
Do you think he was just joking around for part of that — maybe doing the whole self-deprecating thing Hugh Grant loves? It's good for Fred to take his share of the blame, and we all have our flaws. But maybe he'll regret listing so many of them for future girlfriends. Then again, some girls are just masochists and may purposely go after him because they believe they are the ones who can "save" or "fix" him.
