HuffPost TV recently chatted with Troian about the effects of the “A” train, and what Spencer’s inability to let things go is going to do to her relationship with Aria.
“It's definitely going to create a rift with the girls. So much happened in that episode -- and especially with what Aria had to go through, being locked in a box with Garrett's corpse and after all of that, coming out and having one of her best friends say, ‘The last thing Garrett told me was this awful thing about your dad.’ So it really creates a rift between Aria and Spencer, who are so close. And yet, at this moment -- because when Spencer gets wind of a clue or a possible new lead, she can't really let it go -- she finds it hard to take care of Aria, who's going through emotional trauma, thinking, ‘What if my dad is not who I think he is?’”
But believe it or not, the whole Byron (Chad Lowe) mystery of it all isn’t going to be the Liar’s main focus when things pick back up tonight, though it’s a close second … to Mona’s (Janel Parrish) return, of course. So how will Mona being back at school affect Spencer in particular. If you remember, Spencer was the one who was stuck in a car with cray cray Mona not too long ago.
“It's going to have a huge effect. I remember it was actually very funny. We were reading the first episode where she's back and I'm having to interact with her, the girl that tried to throw me off of a cliff not three months before. I was talking to the writers and I said, ‘This is ludicrous! I would have a restraining order. It is awful that this is happening! How is this possible?’ They looked at me and they said, ‘That's exactly what Spencer's going through.’ So I was like, ‘Oh. Well, OK.’ [Laughs.] It was just kind of fun to play the incredulity of this scenario,” Troian said.
And the question remains, is Mona better or is she just faking? Well, according to Troian, it depends on whom you’re asking:
“So the worst part for the girls is the new world that they find themselves in where everybody is wanting Mona to be better and wanting the girls to forgive her, but they know better. They know who this person really is.”
So what is it about Spencer that puts her most at odds with Mona? Is it simply the joy ride they took together, or is it something more?
“I love playing with Janel because she's so much fun and every scene I get to do with her is amazing. But the great thing that was set up between Mona and Spencer is that they're both really, really smart young women and they both want to be the smartest. It was very clear to Spencer that for a long time, she was outsmarted by somebody and that drove her up the wall. Mona, or ‘A,’ took the light and was torturing the girls in different ways: With Spencer, it was like a game of chess and she was always five steps ahead. So now that Mona's back, there is a special connection and bond between her and Spencer because they're in a constant game of one-upping each other,” Troian said.
Talk about one twisted game of chess. Well, both PLL and Mona return tonight, so let the one-upping begin!
