Mariah Carey’s Ex-Husband Tommy Mottola Claims He’s Responsible For Her Success

Record producer Tommy Mottola basically lays claim to ex-wife Mariah Carey’s fame in his new memoir.

Mariah herself has called the relationship “abusive,” and even said she used to fantasize about someone coming to kidnap her so she could escape her marriage.

After launching her undeniably successful career when Mariah was 18, Tommy arranged a “quickie divorce” with his then-wife so he could marry the rising star in 1993. After four years of marriage, the rescue Mariah had been hoping for all those years had finally come in the form of a telling piece on record exec in the 1996 issue of Vanity Fair.

In the damaging and revealing profile, Tommy was portrayed “as an uneducated thug with questionable taste who had muscled his way to the top.” He drove in an armored car, carried a 9mm Glock, and was even investigated by the FBI just so Sony could go ahead in hiring him. What they found was that he was clean, but his friends most definitely were not.

The piece helped the world to see Tommy the way Mariah had known him to be -- as obsessive and controlling, keeping her in what she called “a private hell.” The couple finally divorced in 1997.

In the book, Mariah’s ex offers what New York Post calls “a classic non-apology”:

“If it seemed like I was controlling, I apologize. Was I obsessive? Yes. But that was also part of the reason for her success.”

Do you think Mariah would have been as successful without Tommy’s help?
