The End of The Office: Will Michael Scott Return — and Who’s Getting Fired?

With The Office’s ninth and final season nearing its end on NBC, longtime fans are wondering how it will close up shop. Star Steve Carell departed the series at the end of Season 7, so the big question is whether the World’s Best Boss (Michael Scott’s words, no one else’s) will return for any of the remaining episodes, as originally hoped.

Unfortunately for fans of glaring ineptitude (and hilarity), creator Greg Daniels revealed during the sitcom’s Television Critics Association panel on January 16 that we probably won’t get to see Michael back in Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch.

“Steve is very much of the opinion that the ‘Goodbye, Michael’ episode and the story arc that we did leading up to it was his goodbye to the fans and to the show, and that the stuff we’re doing this season is the goodbye that the rest of the show gets to have,” Daniels explained (via The Wrap).

However, we can look forward to two returns: Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak are both planning on reprising their roles as Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard.

Even better, the final episodes will turn the cameras on the documentary crew that has been filming our favorite workforce over the past nine years. “There’s an episode tomorrow night that is very good, and then the one after that is really what I would say is the beginning of the end, where we start to break down what’s going on with this documentary and see behind the scenes and who's involved,” Daniels added.

He remained mum about the identity of the employee who gets the axe on the February 14 episode, only teasing, “Someone is fired. I will hint at that. There’s drama and someone has to get fired.”

Let’s be real: The Scranton branch is one big, sedentary HR violation, so anyone’s time could be up.
