American Idol

What Is Camp Mariah? – You Ask, We Answer!

On the American Idol 2013 premiere, one of the hopeful auditioners to make it to Hollywood was 28-year-old Tenna Torres. When she was a kid, Tenna mentioned she attended Camp Mariah, named in honor of Board member -- and American Idol judge -- Mariah Carey. Many fans of the show had never heard of the program before and were left asking what is Camp Mariah?

Camp Mariah, which is under the umbrella of The Fresh Air Fund nonprofit organization, offers a summer vacation and learning program to underprivileged children from New York City. Mariah Carey, who makes a point of personally visiting the children several times a year, attended a public summer camp when she was young. She has provided over $1 million in generous donations to The Fresh Air Fund.

The camp is open to kids in grades seven through nine and follows participants as they hopefully move into a college track. Campers who participate in the program agree to commit to three years of educational challenges and fun experiences in NYC and at Camp Mariah.

American Idol 2013 contestant Tenna Torres is a promotional model and a huge Mariah fan. She even brought photos to her audition of her and Mariah when she was at camp. Her performance of “You’ve Got a Friend” won her a golden ticket to Hollywood Week for season 12.
