The Vampire Diaries

What Do Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and Their Vampire Diaries Co-Stars Do For Fun?

Break’s over! Winter vacation has come to an end for the cast of The Vampire Diaries, and everyone is back at work on one of our favorite supernatural teen dramas. Since many of these folks are high schoolers on screen (albeit some are really, really old ones) we got to wondering about their extracurricular activities. What do they get up to when they’re not at work?

No surprise here: they’re an eclectic bunch! Read on to find out what some of these perpetual students could put on their college applications.

Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore): Ian has been in the news a lot of late, because of his biggest passion: charity work. He was first driven to action by the BP oil disaster that devastated the coast of his Louisiana hometown. He then started his own non-profit, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, which made headlines recently as the winner of the Mozilla Firefox Challenge!

Nina Dobrev (Elena Gilbert): When she’s not hard at work being adored by the hottest men in Mystic Falls, Nina can be found outside, swimming or rock climbing, snowboarding or playing volleyball. If she’s feeling indoors-y, you might catch her making her own jewelry, which she crafts out of antique silverware.

Paul Wesley (Stefan Salvatore): This smoldering vampire likes to keep his hotness on ice, because word on the street is he’s obsessed with hockey! He played as a kid, and we hear he remains a fan to this day.

Candice Accola (Caroline Forbes): If she’s not on set, you might find Candice at band practice! This singer toured with Miley Cyrus and released an album (that is huge in Japan!) before she landed her role on TVD, and now she’s part of a cover band called Straight 2 Video with members of the TVD crew.

Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy Gilbert): This angsty little brother is a self-confessed comic book nerd. He even ‘fessed up to his love for comics while walking a red carpet, where he publicly appealed to the folks at Marvel Studios to hire him one day.

Kat Graham (Bonnie Bennett): When she isn’t be-witching (see what we did there??) the small screen, Kat is making music! The songstress signed with A&M records in February, dropped her single, “Put Your Graffiti on Me” in March, and she’s got a brand new song coming out soon!

Zach Roerig (Matt Donovan): Looking for Zach on a day off? Check the outdoors. This former high school jock grew up with horses, and his dream job is with the Department of Forestry. Oh, and according to his Twitter profile, he’s a “Barn enthusiast.” Good to know, Zach.

Michael Trevino (Tyler Lockwood): If Michael has a day to himself, this sports fan seems happy to spend some time tuned into ESPN! If his Twitter feed is any indication, he’s got big love for Kobe and the LA Lakers and the USC Trojans — and you better not call him when there’s a Raiders game on.

Joseph Morgan (Klaus): Much like his hybrid character, Joseph is a bit of a mystery. He’s got acting credits up the you-know-what, and he’s also been busy behind the camera, working on his film Revelation. Otherwise, you’re likely to find him curled up with a good book.

Claire Holt (Rebekah): In her downtime, this athletic lady has been known to spend her days training for and competing in a triathlon! No big deal. (Bonus: she shared her triathlon experience as part of TVD pal and co-star Phoebe Tonkin’s passion project: her website, yourzenlife.com.)

There you have it! Impressive, no? For extra credit, this bunch could also form a model UN. Nina was born in Bulgaria, Joseph is English, Claire is Australian, the quatri-lingual Kat was born in Geneva, and though Paul was raised in New Jersey, he spent every summer with family in Poland and he speaks the language fluently! Not too shabby, folks.
