Right now, the future is looking pretty hopeless for what we once thought was Rosewood's strongest couple. Toby appears to be evil, which means not only is the relationship over, but all of Spencer's memories of it are soured. However, here at Wetpaint Entertainment we're a sucker for a good redemption story, so we haven't given up hope that things could work out in the end.
We won't claim to be as creative as the writers who bring us PLL, but we do have a few ideas about how we'd like to see Toby's story go. These paths could redeem him in our — and more importantly, Spencer's — eyes.
1. He turns traitor on the "A" team. Toby may have been faking his relationship with Spencer for the "A" team's malicious purposes, but we have hope that he developed real feelings for her, too. If he decided to double cross the "A" team, putting himself in constant danger to help the Liars, maybe Spencer would eventually forgive him — especially if she also came to understand why he joined the "A"s in the first place.
2. Redemption through death. In a more extreme — not to mention depressing — spin on the same idea, Toby could ultimately sacrifice himself to save Spencer or another Liar, or to take down a different member of the "A" team. This would be tragic, tear-jerking, and potentially uber-romantic. Exactly the kind of thing PLL loves.
3. Explaining his backstory. Another, more subtle way seemingly evil characters can be redeemed is by a carefully crafted backstory that makes their apparently unjustifiable actions seem reasonable. It's possible that the audience and Spencer could come to understand Toby's POV, and forgive him. Then all he'd have to do is quit the "A" team.
What do you think: Can Toby be redeemed? Should he be? And if your answer to both is yes, how would you like to see it happen?
